During one of the most difficult recent days in the Syrian city of Homs, when the government assault on the opposition was especially intense, a person in the beleaguered city was quoted by a newspaper asking for someone, anyone, to help. "Where is the United Nations?" he asked. That voice - and many similar voices - is the concern of Navi Pillay, the United Nation's high commissioner for human rights. Italian judges hold a pre-trial hearing in Grosseto, Tuscany. The 4,200 passengers and crew who were on the doomed cruise ship have been invited to attend the hearing which will be held in the town's theatre since the court house is not large enough to accommodate all those entitled to attend. Captain Francesco Schettino is under house arrest while investigators consider charges of multiple manslaughter, causing a shipwreck and abandoning ship. Read more…

One of the largest ships in the huge fleet of Costa Crociere, the 114,147 gross ton COSTA CONCORDIA ran aground on the evening of Friday, January 13th, off the Tuscan coast of Italy, near the island of Giglio. Among the complement of 4,200 people on board are 3,200 passengers and 1,000 crew members. Some people jumped overboard and swam to shore as the cruise ship took on a 20 degree list to starboard and appeared to be in danger of sinking. Others were evacuated by boats. Read more…

Italian car manufacturer FIAT yesterday (Wednesday) unveiled the new Panda, its best-selling car, which is now been produced at the Pomigliano plant in the south of the country. The presentation followed new contract deals reached with the unions this week that the company says will help it remain competitive. But not everyone was pleased.
